How To Get Marketing Process Outsourcing Right | Confianzys ...

Marketing process outsourcing (MPO), defined as the outsourcing of a company?s various market-facing activities to an external provider, is not exactly a new phenomenon. It has been in the news for the last 3-4 years, and here at Confianzys, we often hear from technology and product firms who believe we can help them in the marketing department.

Tempting as it is for resource-stretched technology firms to consider such an arrangement, marketing process outsourcing works only when there is clarity of objectives and well-defined metrics to evaluate your progress towards these objectives.

As practitioners of product marketing, we believe that businesses should be looking at these 5 aspects when outsourcing the marketing process:

#1 Strategy is not made in an ivory tower

Marketing outsourcing is treated as a hiving off of low-level activity, and the marketing partner as someone implementing a set of ?to-dos?. This approach fails because it treats marketing strategy and implementation as unrelated activities to be accomplished by different people, or as a linear continuum where implementation follows strategy. In reality, marketing works best on a closed loop where feedback from implementation flows back to strategy and is used to learn and modify.

Another major reason to have your MPO partner closely involved in creating strategy is that many small and mid-sized technology firms do not have a CMO who can drive the process. In these cases too, the MPO needs to have a larger role with integrated inbound and outbound marketing as well as demand creation and communication.

#2 Marketing is not sales, or ?marcom?

Marketing in many technology firms is defined as marketing communication (or ?marcom?) and focused purely on pre-sales collateral and support, or customer visits. This is missing the woods for the trees. Without a broader focus on market understanding, segmentation and customer needs to create the right marketing plan, a business cannot sustain in a market. As the client, you will need to define the role of marketing, and then ensure that your MPO partner is on the same page.

#3 Marketing goals need to be customized and evaluated

Even within the same company, marketing goals can (and should) vary from one market to another and with time. Few technology firms take the time to go beyond generic marketing goals. Higher sales and revenues always figure on the list, but for a new product, there could be another goal too, such as identifying key influencers and early adopters to get a toehold in the market. Work with your MPO partner to define goals that are relevant to your business at this point in time.

#4 Setting the right metrics

Linked to marketing objectives are the metrics to measure progress. Any good MPO partnership needs both partners to spend time at the beginning, identifying and agreeing on the key metrics that will be used to track progress. It is also critical to keep evaluating these over time, since some may not be relevant any more.

#5 Inter-team conflicts and managing them

Too many cooks can spoil the broth. If you are not outsourcing all your various marketing activities to one agency, ensure that the different providers understand the goals and their role in fulfilling these. Individual teams within the marketing division such as pre-sales, marketing communication and sales teams often work in silos, and this will percolate down to the MPO as well.

Have you ever considered outsourcing of some or all of your marketing activities? What according to you would be the key issues to consider in such an engagement?

Facebook reportedly back to building phones, recruiting former iPhone engineers

Facebook reportedly back to building phones, recruiting former iPhone engineers

If the HTC Status' dedicated Facebook button fell shy of satisfying your obsessive social networking needs, sit tight: the house of Zuckerberg may be building a slab of tech just for you. According to the New York Times Bits blog, those old Facebook phone rumors are making a comeback. A handful of Facebook employees and engineers familiar with the matter reportedly say that the firm is collecting former Apple engineers, specifically, ones that worked on the iPhone and iPad. Like Zuckerberg said, mobile is the company's top focus, and one employee says the man at the top is afraid of getting overlooked in a sea of apps. "Mark is worried that if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms." Facebook has focused on deep integration with other devices for some time, but a dedicated handset could take the freshly public company in new directions. Reports suggest that the rumored device is still in its infancy, and there's no word on form factor or OS, of course. Up for some speculation? Check out the source link below for Bits' full take.

Greatest wedding proposal ever: the lip-dub

Isaac wanted to propose to his girlfriend, so he enlisted over 60 friends to stage a Busby Berkeley street-show lip-dub extravaganza ambush. What follows is five minutes of heart-stoppingly sweet and romantic wedding proposal. I mean: Z. O. M. F.G.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012, I told my girlfriend to meet me at my parent's house for dinner. When she arrived I had stationed my brother to sit her in the back of an open Honda CRV and give her some headphones. He "wanted to play her a song"...

Google is killing the small business and giving them little hope to compete online

Quote:

Google was built by the small business. To this day, most of their profits come from the aggregate of hundreds of thousands of small businesses that have small marketing budgets. Big businesses make up about 20% of their revenue. So given this, why on earth are they favoring big businesses, and screwing the little guy when it comes to organic search traffic? How are they doing this? By penalizing small businesses when they try to compete organically with the big guys.

Google is in control of over 60% of online e-commerce transactions. If you are not ranked on the first page of Google for your primary keywords, and you are a small business, you have little chance of being successful online. Without organic rankings, it will be near impossible to be profitable. The problem is, according to Google?s webmaster guidelines, you cannot really do anything that will give you a competitive edge over anyone. You are supposed to only do what is natural. ?Build your site and your marketing campaign to the user, the rankings will come?. That is completely false, if you are a small business.

The highlighted tactic that Google ?forbids? you to do is aggressive link tactics. You see, getting inbound links from other relevant sites still account for 60-70% of Google?s algorithm (Pagerank) weight, and if you want to rank for anything, you need a robust linking profile. Simply put, without links, you don?t rank. And as I stated before, if you don?t rank, you probably are not making any money.

They claim that website owners simply need to build good content which users will like. This will be enough for people to want to link to you, which Google will pick up on. This is great in Google fantasy land but to compete with the ever growing link profiles of large companies, spending millions a year on a good PR campaign, it wouldn?t matter if you wrote a Nobel piece prize winning novel, you still wouldn?t be able to compete.

Do you agree that Google is killing small businesses and gives little hope to compete online?

As Google Tweaks Searches, Some Get Lost in the Web

Quote:

Google Inc. recently tweaked the way its search engine ranks websites, seeking to downplay sites it suspects of artificially boosting their rankings. Now some small businesses say they are scrambling to avoid being relegated to the Internet's junk bin.

Among them is Andrew Strauss, the 47-year-old co-owner of San Francisco-based Oh My Dog Supplies LLC.

In the past, about 70% of his customers found his company from the results of Google searches, often for terms such as "dog beds" or "dog clothes."

Ever since Google's algorithm change at the end of last month, he says his website isn't showing up in Google rankings?at least not where most people would see it.

Traffic through Google has plunged by 96%, he says. Mr. Strauss expects his six-year-old business to generate sales of $25,000 this month, down from $68,000 in March, the month before the changes. "We're completely crippled now," he says.

Mr. Strauss thinks it's possible his site's rankings nosedived because he had paid for hundreds of inbound links in response to a traffic drop of more than 50% following one of Google's 2011 algorithm changes. He says he abandoned that strategy because it didn't work.

His business also contributes posts about dog-related topics to websites like EzineArticles.com and Squidoo.com, with links to his site in each. Still, he doesn't believe his site should be punished for that. "It's just a regular marketing activity," Mr. Strauss says.

Google declines to divulge specifics of its search-ranking algorithm, but it discourages paid links and low-quality website links. According to Google, the recent shifts in its algorithm, known as "Penguin," will enhance the user experience and don't punish businesses that follow its guidelines.

"The Penguin algorithm update was designed to reduce Web spam, which is when websites try to get a higher search ranking than they deserve by deceiving or manipulating search engines," says Matt Cutts, a Google engineer. "In many cases, the affected sites had been spamming for a long time," Mr. Cutts adds.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...747002494.html

Which business owner wants to risk his business or all investements he did?

It seems like Cutts never run a business in his life, and if marketing is considered spamming what else can we do?

I am still amused by all the business owner stories and the Google indifference toward us.

What's your story?

Mod note: combined the above two threadstarts with common theme.

The search engine environment is a dynamic field. Just as quickly as people learn to game the system the system is changed to adjust for the gaming. I don't think that will ever change. I seriously doubt that Google can kill the guys that learn to get sites ranked. It can however devastate the lazy ones that expect to never have to learn again once they've mastered the basics as they stand at that time.

The guys that fall on their knees and scream at the sky about the unfairness every time the algorithm changes seriously need to go into another line of work.

Just my 2 cents. Been watching this happen for over a decade, and every time the algo changes the Chicken Littles blog that the sky is falling. Still hasn't happened. The resourceful find a way.

I totally disagree with you.

If you are a small business owner and you invested thousands of dollars you don't intentionally game any system or you are making a big mistake. It is more obvious if you have a thousands dollars stock.

After talking to many small business owners in the Bank of America small business forum, I don't know one lazy business owner or they are already gone. We all work 7 days a week and sometimes nights to market or work for our businesses. Perhaps you aren't a business owner so it will be just assumptions on how they run it.

Now there is a fine line where Google love to play is page rank and they can do whatever they want to brainwash webmasters.

In the google fantasy world you cannot buy links, you cannot sell links, you cannot market your own articles or your own products on your own site the way you want, because they can consider that as "spam links". Google page rank is a very good excuse to control, hit, penalize, restrict, demote, ban, or favor an industry or a specific target at will. You cannot build links too fast, you cannot change page titles too often, etc it is just BS.

For example Bing don't have page rank so it is much more simpler and smarter.

Search engine is a very dynamic field, but the two last years (not a decade) it looks like progressive annihilation on ecommerce owners like never seen before to favor brands.

Important internet players in my field generate more than 250 links on each product and it is impossible to compete if on the top of that google gives them a super mega exposure.

I have read a lot of articles about SEO, marketing, rankings, etc and 80% is garbage or repeated or spinned information. You know like me that the real SEO experts will either keep their techniques for themselves or get paid for their services. People writting about SEO or like you just did are just repeating what google says

Did you read the Google guidelines? I mean deeply?

There are only hints and you can only guess if you aren't a SEO/SEM professional.

Now google should say that their index is not for little guys it will be much more honest than leaving false hopes to online small business owners.

Dont think so. Think of that how can you promote your business without organic search. You need a huge marketing expense to cater to your customer. WIth google search, it has become easy with negligible marketing costs

If you think that Google is being a bully towards small businesses, then simply stop giving them the power they have over you. Seriously, yes, everyone wants to rank on Google because its important/popular/etc. but you are still overlooking the fact that Google is not the only search engine out there. If you are only going to rely on one search engine, then you're dooming yourself before you even get out of the starting gate.

Many of the policies that google are against I can understand, simply because there are too many out there that are marketing really low quality products or scamming people into parting with their money, and they would do what they have to do to get that to happen (blackhatters, yes). Buying links, selling links, using pyramids, magnets, losh knows what else, simply to get ahead is wrong IMHO, and it shows me (if no one else) that your business is not built on the trust you are supposed to cultivate from your clients or prospective clients. I honestly think that when someone is running about like a headless chicken after one of Google's updates are genuinely scared because of tactics they have used that they know google is not going to like. Simple.

That being said though, Google itself is a business, just like every other online business. Everyone has a set of guidelines about how their products are used, and Google is no different.

Well actually i against that thought.... Google against spammers not against loyal customers...

What is this hypocritical concept? You like it or not Google represent 70% of the search market, how as a business owner can ignore that? Are you going to repeat like many who have ties with google the same thing? Don't you think that google and particularly Cutts use a few well known guys writting about google, seo to promote their manipulative corporate propaganda?

You don't know my business and my market, and that is a complete assumption.

Google is not a online business like any others, you put a site on internet and they scrap it, compared to my customers or visitors coming on my site to read my articles or to buy my products.

Google is not an ethical corporation, they don't respect the laws as seen in many cases around the world, just to name a few: Privacy and data protection.

Other example resulting in lawsuit like selling ads for illegal drugs, etc

Are you an online company like Google? Fortunately I am not.

I did not say ignore . I said not to give them the power they have. All I meant by that, is using other engines at the same time, but focusing less on google.

ah no. I was not making assumptions. if it seemed that way, I am sorry.

Fortunately, they don't scrap every site on the net. They would lose business. they remove sites that violate their TOS. There are many other companies out there that have had law suits aimed at them for the same reasons, or worse.

Whether google is ethical or not, is open to each person's interpretation. But think about other companies that could be called the same thing, because of similar law suits filed. Let me ask you something though. If you developed software for use on the net, would you set rules as to how it would be used, so that its not abused?

Anyhoo, have a good weekend.

Ciao.

I spent a few decades in real estate and when I got in there was a thing called the fully assumable loan. Many of us made a lot of money helping people take advantage of that feature, then it went away based on decisions by the FHA. Poof. Gone. Some people felt it was the end of the world, others learned newer more intricate financial vehicles and we moved forward. We adapted to the changing environment rather sitting around cursing those that changed what we'd known.

My income has been tied to the net for years. Disagreeing with you doesn't mean I'm unprofessional, unethical, or less than knowledgeable. It just means I'm tired of the whining from those that can't adapt to change and am pretty sure there are still opportunities out there for those that seek them instead of griping about the ones that went away.

When the weather gets cold, we can

Ah thanks to clarify

Agree, except if you have court orders to prove that a corporation is not ethical. Every day we see settlements and corporation getting away from their responsabilities, until the next time. Another example to prove that is the huge corporations that didn't learn from the dot-com bubble. Facebook IPO is promoted by Goldman Sachs and Co, check the progression in the market time to time and it will be the same story.

Let me answer you by another question: Is the software company changing rules everytime? Are you asking the people who buy the software with the old rule to comply to the new rule?

I have for principal to respect anyone opinion, but I may disagree. If you are tired of the whining, I cannot help you. We can either stick our head in the sand, talk about it, take some articles to make the point you are trying to make, and exchange tips to help each over.

I hate fatalism, and regarding the time you are trying to adapt (you cannot go fast to make changes on your site because regarding the google policies, you may be penalized for too many changes in a short period of the time) they created other updates or another alorighm. So asking to adapt in this situation it is a joke and it is not a serious solution. I couldn't imagine how painful it will be for a business owner having more than 1,000 pages on his website.

Of course you may disagree. Does that mean others can't disagree with you? Casting stones about ethics and knowledge of those that disagree with YOU is still not productive.

There is nothing in either of the posts you started the thread with that suggests you're looking for solutions, they are just an invitation to agree with you that Google has screwed the little guy. Re-read them and see if you can find a different conclusion. If you're under the impression whining is productive, I cannot help you.

I not a fatalist, I'm a realist. When I was in real estate I never liked it when interest rates rose rapidly. I didnt like it when home values declined. I didn't like it when those in the position to do so altered or removed programs I liked. That said, I still made a professional income despite the obstacles, because others were busy wailing about the new obstacles while I was busy scouting a new route.

Incidentally, when I saw a paradigm shift that I felt was going to be a true barrier to making the income I wanted to make and I didn't see a path around the issue... I didn't bother whining, I looked for a different career path.

True professionals are the ones that look at the changes and find the hole through which to scramble... not the ones that look wistfully at last weeks scenario and wish it were still that way. Improvise / Adapt / Overcome. Whining fixes exactly zip.

There is nothing in either of the posts you started the thread with that suggests you're looking for solutions, they are just an invitation to agree with you that Google has screwed the little guy.
I asked a question on the first post: "Do you agree that Google is killing small businesses and gives little hope to compete online?"
you may not like it and I can understand that if you are a google admirer.

Maryland's State-Run WC Insurer IWIF to Become Private Nonprofit ...

The Injured Workers? Insurance Fund (IWIF), Maryland?s state-run workers? comp insurance carrier, will become a private, nonprofit company under a new name Chesapeake Employers? Insurance, effective Oct. 1, 2013. The conversion is mandated by the legislation passed by Maryland?s General Assembly and signed into law this Tuesday by Maryland Gov. Martin O?Malley.

When the insurer becomes a private company, the conversion would protect the IWIF?s $300 million-plus surplus from any further claims by the state to help balance the state budget. Over the prior legislative sessions, the state introduced legislation to transfer funds from IWIF?s surplus to the state?s general fund.

The Towson, Md.-based IWIF has been serving as the state?s largest writer of workers? comp insurance and the insurer of last resort. It will continue to serve as Maryland?s workers? comp insurer of last resort after the conversion.

?This action will position us for continued success in serving the workers? compensation insurance needs of Maryland employers,? said Thomas Phelan, president of IWIF. ?The legislation will protect IWIF?s surplus and will allow us to remain financially strong.?

Phelan said there will be no change for policyholders and for the insurance agents with whom the IWIF works with. ?For them, it will be business as usual,? he said. IWIF markets workers? comp insurance through independent agents and also directly to business owners. IWIF?s current assets total $1.7 billion

The conversion establishes Chesapeake Employers? Insurance Company as a private, non-profit workers? comp insurer with the same mandate to serve Maryland employers only. IWIF?s existing nine-member board of directors will become directors of Chesapeake Employers? Insurance Company. The Governor of Maryland will continue to make appointments to Chesapeake?s Board.

When IWIF becomes a private company, the state will no longer have any claim to IWIF?s surplus.

?Protecting and Stewarding Our Surplus?

?Protecting and stewarding our surplus for the exclusive benefit of our policyholders is an important priority accomplished with the passage of this legislation,? Phelan noted.

?Otherwise, our surplus would remain vulnerable to future transfers by the state, rather than be available for their original purpose, which is financial stability to ensure payment of injured worker claims. I am confident IWIF will remain financially strong and will continue to provide exceptional service and rates.?

Another change involves the status of IWIF?s employees.

Current IWIF employees will have the right to continue as state employees and participate in the state?s retirement system, or they can opt to become employees of the new company and participate in its separate benefits plan. All employees hired on or after October 1, 2013, however, will be employees of Chesapeake Employers? Insurance Company, not the state of Maryland.

Created by the state in 1914 as the Maryland State Accident Fund, IWIF has operated solely from premium and investment income. No taxpayer dollars support IWIF. From its beginning, IWIF has operated as a guaranteed market insurer providing workers? comp insurance to all who apply, regardless of a company?s size or past claims experience.

Cheap Car Insurance ? Excellent customer service in an Insurance ...

A lot of people when looking to buy motor insurance will shop around as well as end up going with the most affordable quote, or one along with best coverage at the reasonably low charge. Very few people will truly look at the financial energy of the insurance company before you make a decision about whether or not for their services. This could well become a big and costly mistake for a number of reasons.

Today most people will use the world wide web to buy their Chicago auto insurance rates online. They?re going to either use one of the many cost comparison available or possibly approach some insurance company directly. Pre net it was a very various approach. There were cost-free comparison sites and quite a few insurance companies preferred that the general public approached all of them through an insurance broker. The insurance plan broker would get a commission from the insurer in the form of a percentage reduce of the premium offered, normally around fifteen or twenty percent. One of many roles of the insurance professional was, and still will be, to get the best deal because of their client. This concerned getting the cheapest possible quote, in conjunction with the very best financial stability in the possible insurance companies involved. Now that most people readily insurance company directly online, either direct or even through a cost comparability site, those investigations don?t happen.

You will find there?s simplele reason why this matters. Whilst insurance policies work for a year, if you?re involved in an accident which could lead to you making a claim regarding alternative party damages, this could effectively run into several years. Most third party claims for private injury( apart from whiplash claims) tend to be claims which need a long time to assess with regards to how much damage may be suffered by the person concerned. This means that it could rather be five /ten years prior to a claim is ultimately settled, and it will become for a lot of money. One thing you want to absolutely sure regarding is that your insurance company remains to be. If they are not, that they you will still be prone to pay any problems yourself. The reality is in which issuance companies do go bust and don?t realize into financial difficulties for a lot of reasons, but primarily because they are in the chance business and they feel in terms of probabilities, which in turn don?t always come to be right.

Also there tend to be time periods when insurance agencies will enter a market such as car insurance and also undercut other companies in order to get enterprise. Car insurance premiums really are a very good source of income for many insurance companies. Once they have been in it for a few years they get out. Even though they may still be answerable for any claims it might be much more difficult to work out, because they are not within active trading in this type of business anymore.

Most business owners nowadays dedicate a huge chunk of their effort towards online marketing. A real estate business owner will benefit if he adopts tried and tested online real estate marketing strategies. One of these strategies is using SEO optimized websites. Another strategy is placing business information in online business directories. As a marketer, one should be a regular contributor to well-known forums so as to promote one?s products or services.

The basic requirement in online marketing is online presence. A business will have online presence if it has a website. One can make his website using free templates or alternatively one can contract a professional web designer to make a professional website.

Websites made using free templates are normally less appealing and they look unprofessional. However, if one is a novice real estate businessman and one does not have a lot of capital, a website made using free templates will suffice. The most appealing template should be selected. Before launching one?s website, one will have to register a domain name. Registering a domain name will prevent such a name from being taken by another person.

A professionally designed website will make a house buying and selling business to stand out among other businesses. Such a website will be a great promotion tool. Different web designers charge different rates. The designer who charges fair rates should be opted for. One should study a designer?s history before contracting the designer. The designer who has a history of delivering on time and good customer policy will be the best choice. Good customer policy involves answering phone calls of clients at any time of the day or night and answering emails from clients on time.

So that one?s website is known by many people, one will be required to place sponsored advertisements in search engines and to place ads in social networking sites. Sponsored advertisements expose one?s website to millions of internet users who use search engines on a daily basis. Placing an advertisement in a social networking site is a very affordable affair.

Another way of exposing one?s website to millions of potential clients is by optimizing one?s website. A website will be optimized by use of SEO articles. Good outsourcing sites have good writers. Such writers will produce for a person excellent articles that have SEO keywords. Back linking must also be done so that a website is fully optimized. A fully optimized website is traced easily be search engines therefore it will be accessed easily by many internet users.

Real estate businesses that are listed in online business directories will be seen by many potential home buyers. It is important to list one?s business in as many directories as possible so as to get maximum exposure. The full name of one?s business and business contacts should feature in a directory.

Online real estate marketing strategies are used by businessmen who deal with buying and selling houses. These strategies include having a SEO website and placing business information in different online business directories. A website will be optimized by SEO articles and back linking.

(AP) ? Family and friends gathered Saturday at a modest stone church in a hamlet north of New York City for the funeral of Mary Richardson Kennedy, the latest member of that charmed and cursed family to fall victim to tragedy and inner demons.

The service, held on a beautiful spring morning, was private, but the list of celebrities attending was a testament to both Kennedy star power, and Mary's knack for friendship.

The mourners included actors Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and Edward James Olmos, tennis great John McEnroe and musician Paul Shaffer. Glenn Close sang and "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David spoke during the ceremony, according to a program left at the church.

Mary's estranged husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., delivered the eulogy.

Speaking to reporters outside the church before the service, Mary's sister-in-law and nearly lifelong friend, Kerry Kennedy, recalled her as "brilliant" and "beautiful."

"She cared so very, very deeply about everybody around her," she said.

But she added that Kennedy had fought a lifelong struggle against depression.

The 52-year-old architectural designer and environmentalist was found dead of an apparent suicide Wednesday at the family's estate in Bedford. Her death followed a difficult two years, during which her husband filed for divorce and she was charged twice with driving while intoxicated.

Still, Kerry Kennedy said, those troubles didn't stop her from developing "really deep, rich, rich friendships," with friends in every corner of the globe.

"She was an angel who was brought to us, to live with us here on earth, and I think that God just brought her back up to heaven, and said, 'You don't have to fight for me anymore,'" Kerry Kennedy said, her voice breaking.

The casket was carried into St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church by a group that included three of Mary Kennedy's older children, one of her sisters and the hotelier Andr? Balazs.

A bell tolled at the end of the service. Robert Kennedy touched the hearse lightly as it departed with her body.

Mary Richardson married into the Kennedy family in 1994, but had been close to the clan since meeting Kerry at boarding school as a teenager. The pair wound up being roommates for 15 years, including their time together at Brown University.

She had four children with Robert, the son of assassinated U.S. senator and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, but the couple separated years ago. He filed for divorce in 2010. The case was pending when she died.

Shortly after the split, her internal struggles became public when she was arrested twice on charges of driving while intoxicated.

The domestic turmoil extended into preparations for her funeral. One of Mary's brothers went to court to request custody of her body, which could potentially have spoiled a Kennedy plan to bury her near the family's seaside compound in Hyannisport, Mass.

That internment was initially scheduled to take place later Saturday, although it was unclear whether the arrangement had been altered as a result of the court action.

Robert Kennedy and a lawyer for the Richardson family spent part of the day in court Friday arguing the case, before Mary's body was released to her husband just hours before her planned wake. Details of the case were sealed by a judge.

Blind Chinese activist leaves for U.S.

BEIJING (AP) ? A blind Chinese activist was hurriedly taken from a hospital Saturday and boarded a plane that took off for the United States, closing a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng, his wife and their two children were on United Airlines Flight 88, which took off late Saturday afternoon from the Beijing airport. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Newark, N.J., Saturday evening.

Earlier Saturday, Chen spoke to The Associated Press by phone from the airport, saying that he had left the hospital where he'd been staying and expected to leave for Newark, outside New York City.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said, sounding hurried but calm. To his supporters and others in the activist community, Chen expressed gratitude and indicated that he hoped to return.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

Chen and his family were driven up to the plane in a vehicle resembling a minibus, and Chen could be seen being pushed in a wheelchair on the tarmac and then onto an elevator that took them up to a sky bridge that was connected to the plane.

Chen and his family's departure to the United States marks the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught legal activist who made a daring escape from abusive house arrest in his village last month.

His supporters welcomed his departure. "I think this is great progress. We are happy about it," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

Chen sought the protection of U.S. diplomats at the American Embassy in Beijing, triggering a diplomatic standoff days ahead of unrelated high-level talks on global hotspots and economic imbalances led by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. After days of negotiations, the sides announced an agreement in which he and his family would be allowed to travel to the United States for him to study.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children seemed hastily arranged and entirely orchestrated by Chinese and American officials with no apparent input from the activist.

Chen said he was informed at the hospital just before noon Saturday to pack his bags and get ready to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Chen and other activists fear authorities in Shandong province will punish Chen's extended family for his audacious escape. Chen's nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

Chen Guangcheng had been awaiting permission to travel to the U.S. to take up an invitation to study law at New York University after he left the embassy on May 2 and was hospitalized for treatment of injuries sustained during his escape.

The State Department has said that U.S. visas for Chen, his wife and children were ready for them to travel to America. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it had no comment on Chen's planned departure.

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities who led the Tiananmen Square democracy movement.

A self-taught legal activist, Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. But he angered local officials and was convicted in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges. After serving four years in prison, he then faced an abusive and illegal house arrest.

Nanjing activist blogger He Peirong, who was instrumental in helping Chen escape from house arrest, said she was "very happy" to hear that Chen and his family were on their way to the United States.

"I hope that this will be a good beginning," said He, who was detained for several days by police for helping Chen. "I hope that they will all be well and safe."
